Two major earthquakes that took place in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, deeply saddened us all.
While these earthquakes with a scale of 7.7 and 7.6 were noted as one of the largest earthquakes ever to occur on land, 10 provinces and more than 13 million people were affected by the disaster. It is estimated that approximately 1.5 million disabled citizens were also affected by these earthquakes. There are 37,000 deaths and around 100,000 injured in the earthquake to date. The death toll is expected to increase.
It is estimated that there are around 700 ALS patients in the region. Unfortunately, we are experiencing communication problems due to a power outage, and the breakdown of the mobile base station. We lost about 100 medical doctor colleagues in the earthquake area, which left us with heavy hearts. We are in great pain, we are mourning. Our emotions are very intense.
We keep providing monthly house rent, medical equipment, hospital beds, air-mattress beds, and food aid for homeless families who migrate to their relatives in big cities. National and other search and rescue teams made a superhuman effort. Now a new process has started with better cooperation. The generators and ventilators we sent did an excellent job in an emergency case. We are planning a long-term supporting program for patients living with ALS and their family members, and caregivers.
